Scuba Diving Certification Training Agencies

In order to learn scuba diving properly and safely, it is extremely important to take a basic certification course offered by one of the recognized scuba diving training agencies. This will ensure that one is taught the correct technical background knowledge as well as the practical skills required to be a certified scuba diver.

There are more than a dozen such scuba diving training agencies and the major organizations are listed below in alphabetical order.

ACUC (Association of Canadian Underwater Councils) www.acuc.ca

BSAC (British Sub Aqua Club) www.bsac.com

CMAS (Confédération Mondiale Des Activités Subaquatiques) www.cmas2000.org

IANTD (International Association of Nitrox and Technical Divers) www.iantd.com

IDEA (International Diving Educators Association) www.idea-scubadiving.com

NASE (National Academy of Scuba Educators) www.naseworldwide.org

NASDS (National Association of Scuba Diving Schools) now merged with SSI

NAUI (National Association of Underwater Instructors) www.naui.org

PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) www.padi.com

PDIC Int'l (Professional Diving Instructors Corporation) www.pdic-intl.com

SSI (Scuba Schools International) www.ssiusa.com

WASI (World Association of Scuba Instructors) now merged with NASE

YMCA Scuba (Young Men's Christian Association) www.ymcascuba.org

No one scuba diving training agency is better than another. The individual instructor is a more important factor in determining how successful a beginner will be in learning to scuba dive. The student's own efforts and diligence are also important. Many dive instructors actually hold certification cards from several different scuba diving training agencies.

Statistically, there has been no correlation between the frequency of dive related accidents and particular scuba diving training agencies. Instead, lack of dive experience, especially recent experience, has been shown to be the major factor in dive related accidents
