If you made the decision to try out downhill snow skiing, that’s great. It’s one of the most fun outdoor activities and is a nice way to enjoy the winter months rather than being miserable stuck indoors all season long. However, there’s a proper way in learning to downhill ski and an improper way. Unfortunately, many new beginners to the sport do this the improper way which is renting or borrowing a pair of skis and then having friends teaching them. Your friends might have the best of intentions to introduce you to their winter sport but if they are not certified ski instructors, it is unlikely that they are qualified to teach you even if they are expert skiers themselves. Too many beginners who take this route end up either injuring themselves on the slopes or quitting because of a very frustrating day of trying to copy their friends on skis. In fact, trying to learn downhill snow skiing from somebody who is not a certified ski instructor can be unsafe. Many folks who try out skiing this way will never be back on skis again which is a real shame since there’s so much to offer with this sport.
A certified ski instructor is not only an expert skier, but he/she is trained on how to teach skiers using proper techniques appropriate for each different level of ability. Techniques that are suitable for beginners are safely taught under watchful professional eyes. The reality is that many expert skiers and even ski racers who are not certified ski instructors, do not know how to teach beginners since they are always using expert level techniques on the slopes. There have been cases where ex-racers have failed ski instructor exams not because of their skiing abilities but because they were not able to effectively demonstrate beginner basic level techniques which would definitely be a requirement if one is to teach people who have never skied before. A certified ski instructor will ensure that you are taught the appropriate techniques at your own pace and will never rush you on more advanced slopes like your friends might.
So in order to learn downhill skiing properly and safely, it is highly recommended for beginners to take lessons from a certified ski instructor. This will ensure that you are taught the right techniques for your level and ability as well as maximize your safety on the slopes. This is the only right way to get introduced to the sport. Certified ski instructors unlike other expert skiers or racers, are trained to teach ski students and continuously update themselves on the latest teaching techniques available. Many ski resorts offer excellent beginner programs that include ski lessons from certified ski instructors, lift tickets and equipment rentals. With the newer shaped parabolic skis on the market today, learning to ski is much faster than before, especially with the help of a professional certified ski instructor.
